Experience
From May 2010 to October 2015, I was a neonatal nurse. I provided care for babies in the well, special care, and intensive care nurseries at East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC). I helped care for patients from the time of birth until discharge home from the hospital. I received training and certification in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and the S.T.A.B.L.E. Program, which both address resuscitation and post-resuscitative care in newborns.
In October 2015, I became an endoscopy nurse at EAMC. I received training and certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and in conscious sedation after joining the department. I help prepare patients for procedures, such as an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and a colonoscopy. I also take care of patients during the endoscopy procedures, requiring thorough assessments and critical thinking skills. I assist physicians with procedures performed during EGD's and colonoscopies; these include biopsies, polypectomies, dilations, injections, hemostasis, and obtaining specimen and cultures. I organized the endoscopy department's colorectal cancer awareness month in March 2016, which brought awareness to our community about the importance of preventive colon screenings. In 2016 I was selected to be the Healthcare Employees Reaching Out (HERO) campaign ambassador for the endoscopy unit, which will help raise money for the hospital's patient emergency funds.
One of my absolute favorite ways to utilize my nursing skills is by serving children and adults with disabilities at Alabama's Special Camp for Children and Adults (Camp ASCCA). I worked at Camp ASCCA from the summer of 2003 until I graduated from Auburn University in 2007. Returning during the summers and assisting with check-ins as a nurse has brought me so much joy. Many of ASCCA's campers return year after year, so I look forward to seeing my friends from years past and making new friends. There is no place in the world like Camp ASCCA, and I could not be more grateful to now share in the summer experience by volunteering as a nurse.
